Rachael is a self-taught artist and clinical psychologist, currently calling Kohimarama in Auckland home. She has become known for her captivating large-scale gardenscape paintings. Rachael has created substantial bodies of work for her solo exhibitions & ‘Duet’ marks her third with Turua Gallery.
Rachael’s art is deeply influenced by her fascination with connections between creativity, immersion in nature and wellbeing. This enduring interest has drawn her repeatedly to the theme of gardens. Through years of studying and painting gardens and landscapes, Rachael has mastered the brushstrokes needed to capture the essence of a daisy bush or the intricate play of light and shadow on trees. Her brushwork has become intuitive and spontaneous, allowing her to create impressionistic gardens where the paint can seemingly dance from brush to canvas.
In the past, Rachael kept her artistic and clinical work separate, often compartmentalising these two aspects of her identity. However, this collection embraces the interplay between them, where the moodiness, flow and intensity of her brushwork are deeply influenced by the demands of her clinical practice. The empathy and professionalism required in her clinical work are balanced by the emotional release she finds in painting, making each art piece a reflection of this dynamic relationship.
