Cam Munroe

Cam Munroe Artist

We warmly welcome Kapiti-based artist Cam Munroe, who has spent over three decades honing her skills in acrylic and mixed media painting.

Originally from Australia, Cam grew up near Wellington, New Zealand, before moving back to Australia to complete her schooling. She later attended Art School in Sydney, where she earned her Bachelor of Fine Art degree. In 1994, she returned to New Zealand, where she has since made her home with her Kiwi-born husband and their two playful cats, Pepper and Sooty.

"My work is inspired by the ancient pre-historic landscape and its transformation over millennia. I am also captivated by the spiritual essence and traces of human existence that have left their mark on the land, both past and present. I am especially drawn to the enigmatic symbols and markings found on cave walls. What did they mean? What messages were they trying to convey, and how should we interpret them? If I could build a time machine, I would start at the very beginning.”

Cam’s paintings invite the viewer into a world of wandering lines and shapes, guiding the eye through a maze of signs and symbols. Lettering within her works whispers like signposts or landmarks, tempting the viewer to solve the puzzle.

Her work combines impasto texture, acrylic, ink, and oil to create rich surfaces and captivating compositions that evoke an imagined landscape. Wire brushes and sandpaper add extra dimension and tactile depth to her pieces.

With an extensive exhibition history, Cam has been a finalist of numerous prestigious art awards , including the Parkin Drawing Prize, the Molly Morpeth Canaday Awards, the COCA Anthony Harper Award, the Craigs Aspiring Art Awards, the NZ Printmaking and Painting Awards, and the Walker and Hall Waiheke Art Awards. Her work is held in both public and private collections across New Zealand and internationally, including the Wallace Arts Trust and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Australia.

We are sure you will adore Cam's wonderful works as much as we do and are looking forward to sharing her collection very soon.
