Claudia Aalderink Artist

Claudia finds new joy in old materials. In 2012, she discovered the artistic potential in discarded beehives intended for firewood, and it has been the springboard for her understated, rustic pieces. Originally from Holland, Claudia says her 2005 move to New Zealand has been ‘lifechanging’ for her family and her art.

Favouring simplistic shapes such as circles, squares, and rectangles, Claudia repurposes beehives by dissembling them and revealing their unique character. She finds magic in that each piece ‘has its own story’ and a sense of ‘honesty’ in the material. Scars and imperfections are wholeheartedly embraced by Claudia, and they contribute to the pieces’ natural feel.

We adore the sense of history that comes with Claudia’s artworks. She is a forerunner in reimagining old materials, exploring the subtlety of colour, texture, and composition in a cohesive and thoughtful way. We think her pieces totally command attention within space, bringing a sense of warmth and delight.
