Ironsand Village - It Takes a Village

Ironsand Series

Rescued corrugated iron from Tamaki Makarau, Auckland with waxed cord & mercerised thread, fishing line.

125mm (w) x 150mm (h)

This series is an ode to the West Coast beaches of New Zealand and the tight knit communities that thrive there.

I wanted to portray the sea, the sky and the sand all woven together with the people - just as they are in real life.

Along with waxed cord and mercerised thread I have used fishing line which not only has a beautiful reflective quality reminiscent of the sea and the sky but it is also a nod to the fisher-people of the area.  The beautiful grey iron seemed perfect for the work - not only was it the perfect Ironsand colour but it has a toughness about it that spoke to the resilience required to live out West - and originally I’m sure many of the baches would have been roofed in similar iconic corrugate.

Each of the four pieces that make up the series so far has its own story - they are powerful alone but possibly strengthened when they sit together - just like a community I guess.
