Turua Gallery is delighted to present The Afterlight, a new collection of 20 paintings by New Zealand artist Georgina Hoby Scutt.
The exhibition explores renewal, transformation and the process of emerging from darkness into something new, expressed through bold colour, gestural mark-making and layered abstraction.
Working across linen and canvas with acrylic, oil and pastel oil, Hoby Scutt’s paintings move between abstraction, landscape and portraiture. Figures and fragments of the natural world appear within layered compositions, creating a sense of memory, movement and connection.
The works range from intimate pieces through to larger 1000mm x 1000mm paintings, with the collection building in intensity as it progresses.
“The Afterlight is about renewal,” says Hoby Scutt. “It’s not about returning to what was but emerging into something new. I wanted the paintings to move from restraint towards freedom, from shadow towards light, and ultimately towards something that feels vibrant and alive.”
With a background in print and textile design, including five years working as a freelance textile designer in Barcelona, Hoby Scutt brings a distinctive understanding of colour, pattern and composition to her painting practice.
Opening night will be held on Friday, 6 November from 5pm at Turua Gallery, with the exhibition running until 18 October.
Collection will be online from 6pm opening night and any pieces that are available at that time will also be able to be purchased online.
