Maico Camilo

Born in Brazil and based in New Zealand, Maico Camilo brings a life shaped by movement, curiosity and connection into his art.

Maico first arrived in New Zealand in 2005. Since then, his journey has taken him across continents, living and travelling throughout Europe, Asia, South America, and Oceania. These experiences have given him a rich and ever changing perspective on people, culture, and the many ways we make sense of the world around us.

For almost two decades, Maico has developed his artistic practice, exploring his own unique artistic path and questioning the perspectives we hold. Through his work Maico invites viewers to look more closely and consider the realities around them.

There is a strong sense of conversation within Maico’s work. His paintings create space for reflection and interpretation, allowing each viewer to bring their own experiences, emotions and perspective to the work.

Over the years, Maico’s work has been exhibited and collected internationally, with invitations to show in cities including New York, Milan, Paris, Sydney, Tokyo, and Venice. In 2023, he was also invited to exhibit at Auckland Museum.

For Maico, art is ultimately about connection. It is a way of sharing something without needing to explain everything, creating a space where each person can find their own meaning within the work.

At Turua Gallery, we love that openness in Maico’s practice. His work invites us to look, feel and perhaps question something we thought we already understood. It reminds us that art doesn’t always need to give us an answer. Sometimes, it simply needs to start a conversation.
