Following three consecutive sold-out exhibitions, each selling out on opening night—Auckland-based artist Rachael Mayne returns with her most personal and ambitious body of work to date. Her upcoming solo exhibition, A Letter to Them, is a special showcase opening Friday 13 March and running until Wednesday 18 March.
A Letter to Them is a deeply considered body of work shaped by Rachael. Her 15 years as a clinical psychologist and the people whose stories informed and shaped her creative practice. The exhibition reflects what she learned while bearing witness to trauma and hardship, alongside the extraordinary human capacity for resilience, courage, kindness and change.
In honour of that bravery, this new collection sees Mayne pushing herself creatively through increased scale, new colour palettes, and greater artistic risk. Her signature garden paintings function as both a processing space and a dedication to the courage and resilience of her clients.
“This body of work is, in many ways, a letter of gratitude,” says Rach. “It’s shaped by the people who trusted me with their stories and taught me about courage in its many forms. These paintings hold space for both pain and beauty, and for the possibility of growth and change.”
As part of the exhibition, Rachael has written a very personal letter to her previous therapy clients, that gives you some meaningful background to the meaning behind her collection - we invite you to read the letter here.
You can view the exhibition catalogue here.
A Letter to Them is supported by a curated group of partners who will help shape the opening night experience. Babylon Store joins as plant partner, Ligne Roset NZ as furniture partner, and guests will enjoy wine and bubbles from TAPI Winery.
The exhibition is being held at 372 Broadway, Newmarket - just opposite Westfield Newmarket (277).
